Side Arm Slinger

Sifting through these 1979 Topps baseball cards has been a trip down memory lane. Back in 79, the Pittsburgh Pirates had their memorable "We Are Family" run to the World Series championship.
The Pirates had a late game star named Kent Tekulve. My brother and I had been calling him "Teck-You-Lev" all year. There was no SportCenter to learn from. It wasn't until the Series that we learned the correct pronunciation.
Interestingly, the 1979 Topps stats on the back do not show saves. Kent finished his career with over 1000 games pitched, 94 wins, and 184 saves.
He will always be remembered by me as the guy that threw submariner style. Well, him and Quisenberry. Me and my brother used to throw side-arm in our driveway wiffleball battles.
I should have these 79's sorted in a day or two. I will post a want list when I'm done.

  1. The 1979 Series was my first one to see on TV and I remember Tekulve and his submarine delivery well. We all tried to copy it with some rather hilarious results and more than a couple of hit batters.
